This anthology of short stories features 21 tales with twists on time travel.
In the middle of it, you’ll find a piece called “Rescued.” That one’s mine!
The story lived in my head for years before I sat down last year and wrote it. I didn’t know if it would be book length, a novella, or what when I finally let it shape itself. Six thousand words later, it was done. Short story length, by most counts, if on the longer end.
What if those Let’s Kill Hitler stories were told from another perspective—what if the next Hitler was your own child, and you were sent back in time to a near-death experience when you’d saved their life as a young kid? What would you do with that particular second chance?
It was a tough premise. And that’s why it lived so long in my head before I could even bring myself to write it.
It was harder, writing it in 2024, than I’d imagined. By 2024, I was a parent myself, and that premise became both tougher and more critical.
Still, I’m glad I wrote it when I did; by now, when it’s coming out, the world is wildly different than it was when I wrote it, and those changes have not been for the better. Now, the piece feels almost too on-the-nose for the US political climate. But maybe that’s timely? Sigh.
Anyway—I found a home for “Rescued” with Smoking Pen Press.
Along with 20 other stories, “Rescued” is included in the newest Read on the Run anthology and it’s available now!
Some of those other stories are really staying with me. One even stays with me because it makes me happy to think about! I’m not usually much of an HEA reader, but love that one surprised me with that Happily Ever After.
There’s real talent in these pages, in these tales, and some very cool takes on what it means to travel through time. How does one balance selfishness and selflessness when a paradox may be at stake?
